Ecco the Dolpghin for Genesis/Mega Drive Advertisement
Information provided by Riveler (orginally found on Gaming Age)
Riveler found this awesome advertisment for the orginal ecco on the gaming age website, it isn't just an advertisment, it also has an interview with Ed Annunziala (the developer of the game) which gives kewl facts like why ecco was named ecco.
Fake screenshots

Here are several pictures made by Eao that have been made by copying and pasting parts from screenshots of ecco the dolphin for the Mega Drive (Genesis). Pictures - 1, 2, 3
Differences in the Japanese version of Ecco: The Tides of Time Epilogue
Information provided by Reptyx
The Japanese version of Tides of Time has a different epilogue to the english version, here is appoximate translation of it by Reptyx.

Epilogue

At the end of a long journey, Ecco found the time machine at last.
If he destroys the machine, everything ends.
...will it really end?...
He remembers Asterite's words...
His existence is a juncture of time.
He remembers his dolphin-friends' words...
The marks on his head are a sign of his destiny.
...will it really end?...
He would finish everything but found one way...
Instead of destroying the time machine Ecco opened a door of time and disappeared into the tides of time forever...
Lost Level in Ecco the Dolphin for the Mega Drive/Genesis
Information provided by Collprin
There is a level present in the Japanese version of Ecco that is not present in the Europe or American versions. It is similar to the levels trans, iner, inside etc from Ecco: the Tides of Time but is longer and with no morphing. You access the level by being eaten by the vortex queen in the last level. After being eaten you are sent to "The Stomach" (the name of the level). You can see some images of the level in this collection of images made by collprin.
Ecco Saturn
Information provided by Rais
There was an ecco game that was susposed to be like a highly upgraded version of The Tides of Time in development for the Saturn but for unknown reasons it was never finished, all the information I have currentlly is this unclear screenshot of an image taken from a games magazine, and this scanned page from a games magazine. The text in the artical next to the pictures is in Spanish, according to Rais it says something like "we don't know almost nothing of this project, but the quality will be something awesome" and "it moves with a exquisite fluidity" (because they saw it on a preview movie, the pics looks taken from a screen).
Ecco 32X
Information provided by Rais
There was an Ecco game planned for the Mega 32X but when the system failed to take off it was cancelled, all the information I have on it is this very short video footage taken from an 32X promotional video.
Play in cutscenes and play as ecco in fish city and the vortex drone levels (Ecco: Tides of Time (Mega Drive, Mega CD)
Information (and screenshots) provided by Reptyx
*To access Tmachine, The Pod, Vortex Arrived and Selection Scr from the cheat menu, modify the teleportation coordinates, and you'll be teleported into the level. It doesn't matter what you set the coordinates to, except on Tmachine, because low coordinates might start the time travel sequence. (High coordinates like 50,50 should be alright.) The whales on The Pod are black on the sonar map, because they are a part of the background (I think). They look like the whales below Big Water. By the way, if you try and teleport yourself down to the whales on Big Water the game will hang itself.

*Dolphin show! To take control of the dolphin show at Home Bay after you beat the Vortex Queen, wait until three dolphins swim over to you, then quickly turn around and enter the cheat code. On the cheat menu, press C + Start to reset the level. When you press A, four dolphins will swim past you. (You can only do this a few times.) If you swim over to the current, you'll get followed by four dolphins. You can get control of your sonar by teleporting yourself outside the level. (Set the teleport coordinates to higher values than the width / height of the level.) Sometimes, if you're accompanied by the dolphins, another four will join you each time you use the sonar map, although they'll place themselves right over the previous four. If you do this several times the game will slow down and bits of some sprites will disappear. If you enter and leave the cheat menu when the game is really slowed down, you'll get a palette bug.

*To play as Ecco on Fish City and on the Vortex levels, turn around quickly in the beginning of the level, enter the cheat code, and teleport yourself past the metasphere. (Take a look at the sonar map on the Vortex level Innuendo. Is it just me, or does it look like a smiling face?)

Bugs in Ecco (Ecco the Dolphin : Mega Drive, Mega CD)
On the level 'Big Water' take a look a ecco's sonar map and you will see whales floating below the level, but these whales are larger than normal and the wrong colour (screenshot)

On the level 'Asterites Cave' after you return to the present (the level 'the lost orcas'), swim to the up left side of the level and look at your sonar map and after you exit it baby orcas will fall from the sky (screenshot)
Short cut big in the first level of ecco the dolphin (Mega Drive, Mega CD)
Information provided by Collprin
On the first level for Ecco the dolphin for the Mega Drive swim down to the place marked on this map, press and hold c to bring up the sonar map, when you exit the sonar map ecco will swim off the screen and exit to the next level.
Lost levels in Ecco the Dolphin (Mega Drive)
There are a few music tracks that appear on the debug menu music select screen that are not actually present in the game. What were they for? Levels not put into the final game?

Claire Turner contacted Ed at Appaloosa and got answer to this question, which is as follows;

Claire: In ecco 1 there are a few songs that arn't used in the game, where they for other levels that got left out?

Ed: Yes.
Origin Beach : Talk with dolphin's prededessors (Ecco the Dolphin : Mega Drive, Mega CD)
After you start the level (Origin Beach) swim as far to the right as you can go and when you reach the far right of the level, hit the rock wall at the far right with your sonar about a dolphin length above water height. If you hit the right spot you will hear this message "You sing our song under the waves who are you? Could we sing in the sea? Could we live in the sea? Prehaps we will try!" then swim to the far left of the level and repeat the procedure on that side of the level and you will get this message "We hear song in the ocean! We hear our kind in the sea! Never have we heard songs in the sea!"

I am sure that this is not just a recording like the messages from the glyphs because it asks a direct question (who are you?) this doesn't sound like tone of a glyph message, they all simply gave information. These crearures who you talk you speak the same language as dolphins, who are they? Well some scientists think that dolphins evolved from land mammals and these creatures are on land but we don't know if they are mammals but they do say that they will try to live in the ocean and the title of the level "Origin Beach" suggests that something orginated here. Could this be where dolphins first orginated when these creatures decided to try living in the water? This is mostly speculation by me, what do you think of my theories on this? Please email me with your comments and any ideas of your own that you might have on this.

If your unsure of the locations you can look at this map made by collprin.

Update 14 of August 2000
Claire Turner has contacted Ed at Appaloosa and got answer to this question, which is as follows;

Ecco, as a character, was always curious about why, if they beathe air, do dolphins live in the sea. He was to be very interested in this answer. Then when he went back in time... he was to meet the dolphinkind as land animals... The land dolphins see ecco, and hear his songs in the sea... the idea was that it was actually ecco who inspired the land dolphins to live in the sea. So ecco became the answer to his own question - why do we live in the sea. But we ran out of time and could not make the animations for what I just described. but I hid the messages in the game anyway - thats why its called origin bay

Secret Passwords (Ecco: Tides of Time. Mega Drive, Mega CD)
After the games is completed straight through from the start to the end, without using a password, you will be given a 'secret password'. This password doesn't do anything apparant and is one of the biggest mysteries of all the Ecco games. It is said that not even SEGA knows what it is supposed to do. There are five possibilities with the password, one - it does nothing and never was intender to do anything, two - it has intended to do something but that feature was taken out of the final version, three - there is a bug in the game that stops it from doing anything, four - it does something but it is so well hidden that nobody has ever found it or five - it does something or was intended to do something in another game. Since the only persons who knows the real purpose behind this password are the orginal programmers of the game, unless one of them talks we may never find out what the meaning of this password is. If you have any ideas or information on this I would be very interested in hearing it.

Update 14 of August 2000
Claire Turner has contacted Ed at Appaloosa and got answer to this question, which is as follows;

If we were to make ecco 3 I was going to make is so that if you entered that password you'd get something special. I really wanted to connect parts 2 and 3. but I never got a chance to make part 3

I did the same thing in Warriors of the Eternal sun - The D&D game for the Genesis. but I never got a chance to make a sequal to that one either.
