The Mega CD/Sega CD version of the first ecco the dolphin game, it is basically the same game with the great graphics and gameplay but it is changed in a few ways.
Firstly the music is all new cd quality tracks, these new tracks are soothing music that fit the slow levels perfectlly and sound great, I don't know if I think they fit a final boss battle though, they just aren't frantic enough for that in my opinion. Certain sounds have been improved as well such as a new recorded splash that puts the sound of ecco going in and out of the water in the first game to shame. Several new levels have been added that expand the game and fill in some unanswered questions from the orginal, like where did all those ships come from? (I'll not spoil the answer for you) There is also a kewl animated introduction sequence (see the move downloads page for a copy) but unfortunatlly the ending sequence is just still in game graphics. There are slower loading times than the orginal thanks to it being on cd but it isn't enough to be annoying. Overall it's a good improvement over the first and if you have the choice of the orginal or this go for the cd version, but if you have the orginal already there may not be enough new to make it really worthwhile getting the cd version. |

Reader's review - by Ecco the Dolphin
The first games of its series, this game attracted most of the older Ecco fans. It had good graphics for its time and on the CD had and added intro sequence as well as several added levels. The added levels use the same engine as the ones in Ecco: The Tides of Time do so at first it looks a little wierd, but these levels are actually among the best in the game. They really deepen the storyline quite a bit, and show that the dolphins don't know about humans, or possibly just where the human shipwrecks came from. They call them strange whale skeletons. Back to the review, the game featured a complex and dynamic plot as the game progressed. At first the player can think the game is a simple "rescue your family" type of game but it grows into much more. The CD version wasn't as celebrated as the cartridge, but if you have a Sega CD then you should definately try to get this version if you can. You won't regret it.
