| Ecco The Dolphin for Game Gear, the short-lived hand-held gaming machine from Sega, is basically the same as its big brother Genesis console cartridge player, but then again there are differences, both good and bad, about the hand-held experience.It's to be expected, since the GG of course didn't have the graphic or sound power of Genesis, but let's take a look, shall we ? The graphics are definitely NOT up to par with the console original, but as said before, it's to be expected.Fish are little more than yellow and pink dots, Ecco is a tiny gray speck on the screen.But when compared to some of the other Game Gear games, it's really quite good.The music is totally different from the Genesis version, none of the original themes except the Time Travel music are intact on here.But although they're tinny and static, these new musical themes are probably the best you'll ever hear on a GG cartridge.I think the same composer did the music on Ecco Game Gear, and it shows.As always, the music is quality. The storyline, although getting a bit chopped up by the loss of some information bearing glyphs *Example : The Library*, other dolphins, and cut-out levels, remains intact.Ecco's family is sucked up by a voracious alien horde and he has to trek through the oceans to find them.The bad thing about this version is several levels are gone or compacted into other zones to make it shorter, which kind of cuts down on the gaming pleasure when you've played the original and your favorite level has mysteriously dissapeared.Another thing is level names have been changed, presumably to make the levels left in seem new and thus draw attention away from the missing ones.Work of the Vortex ? You figure it out. For die-hard Ecco fans, this version will be wanted mainly because of the great musical themes and because, hell, it IS an Ecco game.Just don't expect it to look like you're playing the Genesis. |
